Skin Deep

Ever think of your iPod, PDA or laptop lid as a canvas for your creative projects? Skin customization is the newest thing in personal electronics. Many companies that offer pre-designed skins also allow you to upload custom artwork. Use your digital skills and supplies to make your personal electronics look fabulous.

The first step to sprucing up your gadgets is to measure your device carefully. Open up a 300 dpi document just a little larger than the dimensions of your device. Some sites offer templates that make this step easier. Design away and when you feel good about your image, upload it. The skin will be printed on white vinyl, laser cut to fit your specific device and sent to you in the mail.

For the lid of my laptop, I used a warm, distressed design. The papers were layered and digitally distressed by using color burn and overlay blending modes. A distressed font adds texture to the look.

Check out this list of sites. They offer custom skins for everything from cell phones to refrigerators!
